Glow In The Dark Address

Glow in the Dark Address

We live on a corner with bushes hiding most of our house.  I needed to come up with a way to showcase our address numbers with out being too gaudy.  Here is what I came up with!

Supplies:

  • Glow in the dark Spray Paint (Fraser Valley Ace Hardware $13.99)
  • Exterior clear coat spray (Fraser Valley Ace Hardware $4.49)
  • Address letters (Fraser Valley Ace Hardware $1.99 each)
  • Stain (Benjamin Moore Arborcoat Samples $6.99)
  • 5 Gallon Bucket stir sticks (Most paint stores don’t mind giving you a few for your projects, just ask nicely)
  • Glue (could use a hot glue gunImage

Step 1: Stain

I chose an interior stain to achieve the exact colour that I wanted.  But if you find a Benjamin Moore Arborcoat stain colour that you love, you can get it in a sample pot and just use that.  This would also eliminate the need for the exterior clear coat spray!  Although the spray is going to help it last a lot longer.

Make sure you stain the two edge pieces that will be visible.

Stir sticks have a curve in it to help remove paint from rollers, don’t forget to stain this park of it because it will be visible.

Step 2: Glue

Glue all your stir sticks together.  I grabbed a couple extra quart stir sticks when I was at the hardware store.  But you can use a piece of scrap wood you have in the garage or something!  I ended up going with Gorilla glue for the best adhesion. It takes 1-2 hours to set, make sure you apply pressure to the pieces you are gluing together.

Step 3: Spray Painting

While my glue was drying, I went and sprayed the numbers!  On the side of the can it recommends 2-3 coats within a couple minutes of each other, so that is what I did.

Step 4: Glue Letters Down

I used Gorilla Glue again for this process and just like before, I put weight on the letters to ensure a good stick!

Step 5: Spray the entire thing with the exterior clear coat if necessary.

Step 6:  Screw onto the side of your house and VIOLA!  You have glow in the dark address numbers.  Your delivery people will be so happy!

A trick to keep in mind!

When removing the numbers from the package, use an exacto blade to cut right around the number.  With Glow in the Dark paint for exterior use, it may need touch up coats down the road.  If you keep these number cut outs, you have the perfect shield.
